Scorpion Mini v2 Speed Controller

The

Robot Power Scorpion Mini is a small low-cost high-performance single-channel

speed controller for 1 lb. (antweight), 3 lb (beetleweight) and larger

robots. It is designed for ant and beetle weight combat robots, sumo

robots, and other small robots such as firefighting robots, maze

solvers and carpet rovers.

The Scorpion Mini

is designed to pack the highest power handling capability in the

smallest package.NOTE: You will

need to solder your motor and battery leads onto the board, otherwise

you can purchase a screw terminal block (<a href="RP-MINI-TERMINAL.html" target="_top">sold

here</a>) that can be soldered

on, which will allow you to connect the wires easily with a small

screwdriver. Either way, SOLDERING IS REQUIRED.

Features

• Size: .625” x 1.6” x .4” (without screw terminal)

• Weight: 6 grams with servo lead installed

• Standard R/C pulse format

• Calibrate funtion to match unit to radio signal range. Settings retained in EEPROM non-volatile storage

• 4.8V to 34V battery voltage (>18V requires an external 5V supply)

• 2.5A continuous, 4A with heatsink, (6A peak) current

• Full current limiting and over temp limiting. This thing is nearly blow

proof!

• Drive chip mounted on the bottom of the board for easy attachement of

heat sink if desired. Not generally necessary but it will extend the time you

can run at above 2.5A.

• Limit Switch inputs to stop motion in one direction when closed. Motion is allowed in the other direction

• Indicator LED for speed and direction of motor

• Status LED information and mode indications

• Receiver battery eliminator circuit (BEC) standard – may be disabled.

This can provide up to 100 mA of current at 5V to the RC receiver and other attached

electronic circuits. (Must be de-rated for input voltage above 12V)

• Failsafe shuts off motor if R/C signal is lost

• FLASH-based microcontroller with upgradeable software via in-circuit programming

header

• Optional 4 position screw terminal may be soldered to top or bottom of

PCB for easy removal of battery and motor wires

• Capable of supporting I2C or serial command streams. Not supported by stock R/C software but user may replace the stock code if desired

Working fine.

I have the board/software version 2.4. I first tried this ESC without a heat sink (at around 3.5 Amps with 9.6V NiCd power). I am using it in a water tight enclosure (R/C boat) - so, as advertised, it correctly shut down when it got too hot. I added a decent size heat sink (as suggested), and it now runs continuously just fine. Note that I did have a very weird minor issue: if I power two LEDs off the 9.6V power to the ESC, the ESC would not allow the motor to go forward at all (reverse OK, but not FWD). The manufacturer failed to respond to my email about this odd issue. Also Scorpion does not have good detailed specs for it (basic specs are OK, but if you want details, they are not available ... yet?).
